All people who have successful careers started in the same place you are at now: the beginning. You may be feeling lost or confused as to how you will get a job, but know that it will happen if you take the appropriate steps. Landing a successful career takes time, hard work, and diligence. In order to be successful you must start from the beginning. Here are some key steps you need to take along your journey to achieve professional success.
Educate
The first step in getting the job that you want is getting the proper education. Many companies want to see that you hold either an associate or bachelor’s degree. If they don’t require a degree, many employers want to see that possible employees have at least some sort of certification in the field. If the hiring choice was down to you and someone who had education or training, the one with education would typically get the position. Education is always a great investment to make, no matter what your career path may be.
Search
Landing a job begins with actually finding places where you would want to work. You can find job openings on job boards, through networking, and by looking at actual websites from the companies you want to work for. Job boards allow you to find openings that fit your specific interests and needs. Although job boards are an excellent resource, it might behoove you to go directly to companies you want to work at. Doing this will allow you to see if the company has any openings in the position you are interested in. Networking is also a great tool to finding a job. Family, friends, colleagues, and even acquaintances on social networking sites can potentially lead you to a promising position.
Sell
Now that you have found a company you want to work at, it’s time to apply. Applying is an important step to getting your foot in the door. Employers go through several applications in addition to yours. Your application should set itself apart from other applicants. The design of your resume should be clean and uncluttered; white space is always refreshing. After you have grabbed the employer with your design, you must keep their attention with the content on your resume. Make sure to include education, past work experience, and the skills you possess. The more you write about what you did personally to contribute to the success of your previous place of employment helps sets you apart.
Speak
Once you have landed an interview, now is the time to shine. You should be at your best. Dress better than you think the interviewer will dress and come prepared with additional copies of your resume, just in case. You should arrive roughly 10 to 15 minutes earlier than your assigned time to ensure you find the location and fill out any paper work before the interview. Once you are in the interview you need to sell yourself. This is not the time to sit back and simply answer the questions. You need to take the answers a step further by going into detail about specific experiences. This will give you the credibility in your skills and knowledge about what you are talking about. It will also allow the interviewer to see your personality shine through.
Follow Up
After the interview is complete it’s always nice to thank the company by sending an e-mail or letter. Although this doesn’t always help with getting hired, it shows you are serious. Next, wait until the company contacts you. In the interview you should ask when to expect and answer. If the time the interviewer says comes and goes without an answer, you can contact them to see if the position has been filled.
Work
Once you get hired, the first couple of months are your time to prove and establish yourself within the company. You need to learn everything you can about your tasks, coworkers, and the operations of the company as a whole. You will also need to work as hard as you can. Getting noticed right off the bat will lead to higher-level positions sooner and will show your employer that you have a great work ethic. As you continue to work hard, you will be rewarded with higher pay and positions. As you take on new responsibilities you will learn more about your field and work your way up to your dream career.
Everyone has had to start somewhere in their professional career and now it’s your turn. Although it will be a lot of hard work, the journey is a rewarding one, filled with lots of learning experiences, character building, and self-growth. Once you find an entry-level job and gain experience, your career options will only get better until you reach your potential.
